Driving School: Tips on How to Avoid Road Hazards

July 7, 2016

Looking for road hazards is an important part of driving. Especially when you are driving a large vehicle like buses, trucks and when towing a trailer. Commercial trucks are normally heavy and most of the trailers on the road are lengthy. Making it more challenging for a truck driver to see what’s going on around the surroundings.

There are many reasons why people are getting involved in an accident. It can be a human error like drunk driving, lack of focus, or fatigue. Improper truck loading is also one of the causes because some drivers don’t have a proper truck licence training. Road hazards can be a huge factor because of these unwanted circumstances. These road hazards are oblivious to some drivers.

Hazards are inevitable. It’s not easy to avoid. Being a truck driver, part of your job is to make sure that you deliver the products on time. You will face different road hazards that could be a burden in completing your tasks properly. These may include; Animals, Pothole, Pedestrian Crossings, and Cyclists.

So how can you ensure your safety even if you’re driving a large vehicle?

School of transport listed numerous tips on how to avoid dangers while driving on the road:

  1. Lighten Up Your Mood

If you’re going to drive, lightening your mood can massively help you perform well. Be optimistic and try to relax yourself. This will give a good atmosphere so when you face any road problem you can respond easily. Driving needs extra patience. If you’re stressed, tendencies are you easily get angry and irritated. Take a deep breathe, inhale and exhale. It’s a good practice to release your tension and worries.

  2. Listen Very Carefully

If you cannot avoid listening to a music while driving, make it sure that the volume is not high. This will enable you to hear noises like a vehicle horn, a car trying to outstrip you, and emergency signals from an ambulance or a fire truck. Stay alert to the potential danger that can come your way.

  3. Look Closely At Your Surroundings

Keep your eyes busy by scanning the road. Always look on the roadside and use your mirrors. This will help you see the vehicles at your back. That way, you can have enough time to react to any possible hazard. Avoid doing unnecessary actions that will steal your focus. Never attempt to use your mobile devices instead give your full attention to driving. Use your rear-view mirror to see if there’s a cyclists entering your way. Keep your windshield clean to have a clear view of your surroundings. Maintain your visibility wherever you are.

  4. Leave a Space

Always remember the three-second following distance. Typically, a driving school suggests this to their students. You should sustain a safe following distance to avoid any vehicle collision. To do this, look for an object on the road like a signage, a tree, or an overpass. Then, count one thousand one, one thousand two, and one thousand three. If you reach the point before completing the count, it means you’re following the other traffic very close. It is significant that you’re following the three-second rule to have enough time if there are problems ahead of you.

  5. Learn the Right Skills from a Qualified Driving School

A driving lesson can be a vital key that will develop your driving skills to avoid road hazards. Instructors will teach you safe driving practices so you will know how to overcome them during emergency situations. Driving courses will be very beneficial as you will know how to react to various real-life driving situations. It will also raise your safe driving awareness.

If you were involved in a destructive accident before, you may feel that driving is not for you. Driving anxiety can arise. Trainers will provide you helpful driving school tips to ensure your safety.

Truck drivers crossing the intersection should be extra careful. Be vigilant to any possible threats that may cause a delay on your delivery. Following these helpful tips from our driving school can give you a stress-free driving experience.
