Truck School Brisbane: How to Drive on Roundabouts

January 7, 2017

Are you confident enough when driving on a roundabout?

Driving on a roundabout is one of the common agitations of drivers. Not only for teenage drivers, but some of the most experienced motorists can be confused when they encounter this traffic circle. Some of the questions that may arise are:

When will I indicate a turn signal?

To whom will I give way?

Am I doing the right thing?

According to a recent survey conducted by the Royal Automobile Club of Queensland, majority of the Queensland drivers failed the RACQ’s roundabout report card. The survey also shows that some of the drivers were just duplicating the vehicle in front of them even if they are doing the wrong thing.

To help you drive safely on a traffic circle, School of Transport has compiled a handy guide for the proper protocol when driving on a traffic circle.

Driving Tips for Roundabouts:

  • When approaching a multi-lane roundabout, it is important to move to another lane before exiting. If you are moving to another lane, you should give way to the vehicles on the path you are moving to.
  • At the point when moving towards a roundabout, you need to give way to all the vehicles already on the traffic circle. Our Truck School Brisbane advises keeping your vehicle on the left side of the road.

When Turning Right or U-Turns:

  • Position your vehicle on the right side of the road, except when you see an arrow or a sign that indicates otherwise.
  • Utilise your right indicator as you come near and enter the circle.
  • When you are about to exit the circle, obey the exit lane and use your left indicator.
  • Stop pointing out once you have exited the traffic circle.

Give way to the left:

  • Position your vehicle on the left side of the road, except when you see an arrow or a sign that indicates otherwise.Utilise your left indicator as you come near and enter the circle.
  • When you are about to exit the roundabout, our Truck School Brisbane suggests using your indicator to your advantage.
  • Stop pointing out once you have exited the traffic circle.
  • Make sure that you are driving on the left lane as you finish your turn.

 When going straight ahead:

  • You don’t have to use your indicator until you are prepared to leave the roundabout.
  •  Position your vehicle on one of the two lanes except when you see an arrow or a sign that indicates otherwise.
  • Stop pointing out once you have exited the traffic circle.
  • Our Truck School Brisbane recommends giving signal using your indicator to let other motorists know your intentions. What do you fear most when approaching a roundabout?Hope these tips will boost your confidence when driving on a traffic circle.Share your thoughts below and we will help you overcome it.
